Ping

A phrase used to describe a practice whereby a fill or kill order is sent to a venue (often in an amount of one or a few shares) to identify whether a prospective counterparty order is resident in the venue. This may be used as a precursor to sending a larger order to the same venue and/or trying to ‘game’ the resident order.
